The Successful Reflexologist

The Successful Reflexologist Builds a Business

Focus, focus, focus. Or so reads the opening of The Successful Reflexologist

It seems to be a winning strategy. Focus on marketing and research, for example, has proven to be a successful strategy for several reflexologists seeking to recruit new clients and build toward inclusion in the medical community.

Here’s what some reflexologists have had to say about their strategies.

Erma

Goals: Grow her business. Recruit new clients. Pursue reflexology as applied to cancer
patients.
• Phase 1: Become more informed about research. Read Evidence-Based Reflexology for
Researchers and Health Professionals.
• Phase 2: Create interest and recruit new clients by handing out foot reflexology charts to all she
encounters.
• Phase 3: Use the research brochure Can Reflexology Help Me?to recruit new clients. The result
has been 2 or 3 new clients. Moreover, she’s was included in the networks of these new clients.
Result? One new client passed the brochure on to a co-worker who then became a client. These
new clients, both health professionals, lead to an introduction for Erma to two hospitals’ Cancer
Care Clinics and Cancer Support Groups.
• Phase 4: Using the brochure Can Reflexology Help My Cancer Care? as a calling card,
Erma got on the schedules now to do presentations for the cancer support groups at the cancer care centers of the two hospitals. One is distributing the brochure.

Jan, Savannah, GA

Goal: Approach a cancer care facility
Actions taken: Ordered: Evidence-Based Reflexology for Reflexologists; Can Reflexology Help
Me?; Can Reflexology Help My Cancer Care?; The Kunz & Kunz eBook Collection.
Result: “I am really appreciative of all of your help and your wonderful brochures—they were
received by the Cancer Institute here with great interest and I have been asked to be a member of
their Integrative Program Planning Board. I have no doubt that your cancer brochures were the
greatest help in making that happen.”

Peter C., Ontario, Canada

Goal: Grow his business
Phase 1: “The Successful Reflexologist
Phase 2: While browsing through Chapters Bookstore in Ancaster, Ontario, he noticed the store’s
Event’s Calendar. “One thing lead to another,” as Peter says and, if you’re in the vicinity of Meadowlands Mall in Ancaster, Ontario, he’ll be there to demonstrate and explain reflexology while the store displays the reflexology books as suggested by Peter.

MyReflexologist Says: Feet Don't Lie

A comment off Facebook about MyReflexologist Says: Feet Don't Lie.

"That is a great book! I have bought practically everything you have published! I want to order more of your brochures "Can Reflexology Help Me? I need to know what e-address to go to, so I can do that. A local hospital accepted my reflexology information along with your "Can Reflexology Help Me" brochure, as they are considering adding Reflexology to their alternative therapy program. Thanks for all the knowledge that you share."

Really touching comment- thank you

My father passed away this last January. Got to go to his home in Idaho Falls over the weekend and  look through his Reflexology books. He did have original publications of Eunice Ingham thatsomeone borrowed and never returned (sad loss). He wore out several of your books as they were at his bed side for years. His new favorite was your recent publication which was the hard back. I had ordered it for him. He had made a comment that this new book was one on the most comprehensive books for reflexology he had ever seen.  I appreciate the time and effort you and your wife take to share your love of  this work. ~G"

Complete Reflexology for Life

"Kevin, I finally bought you Complete Reflexology for Life book last night just before working at the student clinic on my Auricular Reflexology practicum and it's such a FABULOUS BOOK - love the 10 Minute hand-relaxer workout!

I love all of the pictures and self help with the golf ball - just everything. Thank you! Get this book - full of invaluable information!" Lehsa

When we wrote Complete Reflexology for Life we added a series of techniques to quickly loosen the feet and hands. I just finished a session with a massage therapist who thought they were great. They only take a few moments but the effects are lasting.

In our book Practitioner's Guide to Reflexology (1985) we put out this series of techniques we called "Stride Replication". The theory was that you could replicate some of the signals necessary for stride in a way that would relax the feet very quickly.

The book came out during the merger of Prentice Hall and Simon and Schuster and was murdered in the process.

Unfortunately these techniques lay dormant for quite awhile. But they are very effective in quickly loosening the feet and hands. Like "dessert techniques" they act globally on the whole foot not targeting specific reflex areas. Yet it helps the overall relaxation response and it prepares the foot or hand for more effective technique application.

Thank you for paying attention to these techniques, Lehsa. After 15 years it is nice to see them get some recognition.

Tips for a Reflexology Party

© Vojtech Vlk . Image from BigStockPhoto.com

We just had a wonderful time in LA doing a Reflexology Party. We learn a few things we wanted to share to make a successful Reflexology Party with you.

1. Organization is important. Although we strayed somewhat from our schedule everyone felt they received attention. If you can get a list before the event it helps to organize it in your head. Arrive early. Get your chairs set up and any other material like literature should be well displayed.

2. Know a little about the people coming. Occupation is always helpful without being to prying. But if your party is hosted how the hosts know the attendees.

3. But also be prepared to be surprised. We worked on  someone who knew a dear friend of ours, who had been a long time reflexologist in the LA area.

4. Pass out charts. People love charts and they serve to add value to your event. Charts can be ordered in bulk. And charts can be personalized which really works well.

5. If it is a high class crowd pass out books. It is an investment in gaining new clientele but it is classy. You can also bring post-it notes to mark out self help or techniques pertinent to them. Amazon offers discounts on larger orders.

6. Food is also a nice touch as it gives people something to entertain themselves while waiting. Make sure it is in a separate area.

7. Don't forget the business cards, brochures and any show and tell that will liven the occasion. We brought some of our Total Reflexology kit and our Reflexology Path kit. It was a real conversation starter.

We did a slideshow on our laptop of reflexology paths. People could watch it while waiting. It was quite a success.

Finally relax and have a good time. It is after all a party.

Okay so I started it.

My day started out early. Fed the cats and got the newspaper. Checked my Twitter account and had a real nice tweet about Reflexology: Health at Your Fingertips and our Reflexology Deck. The Circle of Light linked the tweet to their website. There was one of my most favorite reviews of Reflexology: Health at Your Fingertips. The Circle of Light folks are such nice people. Sincere. And they have over 4600+ followers on Tweeter. That is a lot of people or so I thought.

Then I get the bright idea to invite in mass the folks from my Facebook Reflexology Forum to either follow me on Twitter or become a friend on Facebook. There are close to 1500 people in this group.

It was like an explosion with people coming in from all over the world. I am at one point chatting with a very nice man from Istanbul who wants us to come to Turkey. At the same time I am chatting with Tunisia and Ireland.

I am madly picking up news along the way. Like the President of Turkey has foot reflexology done. And when Hillary Clinton was in Turkey they talked about to her reflexology.

There was a person from Stockholm who was so pleased with our tips. And the Russians asking to be Facebook friends were delightful.

I felt like a traveled around the reflexology world in one day. And the Twitter and Facebook requests keep coming. The really, really sweet part of this experience were the nice comments about us and our work. As I told one Facebook friend it warms an author's heart.

Nice day.

Lots and lots of news

It has been the week for news.

The real good news is that Reflexology: Health at Your Fingertips is back in stock.  It is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Complete Reflexology for Life is still out of stock (and going for ridiculous prices) but there is a paperback edition coming in on August 17th. The hardback edition isn't coming in until September 17th.

The Reflexology Path Kit is also coming into Barnes and Noble stores on September as well. Remember it is only being offered by Barnes and Noble.
Total Reflexology, the very popular kit from Barnes and Noble seems to be in good supply but stocks are dipping and it is hard to say whether it will be available for the holiday season. Total Reflexology ran out three weeks before Christmas and wasn't back into stock until March.

Both kits may be out before the holiday season is over with.  So you might stock up as soon as you can.

Another kit is in the works. It should be out sometime in March of 2010.

And we are just waiting for the paperwork from Apple on the IPhone/ ITouch app (see illustration).

Wiggling Toes Part 3 and other stuff

I have been finding the more I wiggle my toes to help me sleep the more my feet seem to benefit as well. It feels like it is loosening up my feet beyond the toes and into the body of the foot. This feels really good. Delightful, in fact.

Have any of you toe wigglers out there had similar reactions?

Also Michael Reed Gach in one of his many acupuncture books had a foot to foot exercise I have been using lately with great success. You lay one foot on the floor and place the other foot on top of it. Apply slight pressure. It squeezes the foot in a nice way kind of like the electric foot rollers that have a contraption to squeeze your foot.

I like to rock the foot a little side by side increasing pressure as it feels de-stressing. Never do it beyond your comfort zone and always start out gradually. Don't hurt yourself. I find it feels very good to reposition the foot along the spinal area on the inside of the foot and give a press all the way from the ball of the foot to the low back area.

This is the ultimate low energy, sit in your big comfy chair and have a positive impact on your feet exercise. Try it. Tell me how you like it.

And books still are scarce. DK is rushing to put books Reflexology: Health at Your Fingertips and Complete Reflexology for Life back into print. The Total Reflexology kit from Barnes and Noble will very likely be out of stock soon. It is out of stock online and there seems to be very few in stores.

This all points to the soaring popularity of reflexology. I still can't get over the prices for Complete Reflexology for Life. Apparently since it is out of stock the prices FOR USED Editions start at 80 bucks and go up to $376.00. And they are selling!!! The 3 new copies were sold at $180+ right out. Really crazy.

Are you seeing a surge in interest in reflexology? There was even a mention in the paper today of Lance Armstrong and getting his feet rubbed. What is going on?
